Arc Flash Risk Assessment

What is arc flash ? Arc Flash is the night mare for most of the safety and electrical maintenance engineers in their facility. Osha insists all the plants to perform Arc Flash Risk assessments and implement the mitigation techniques to stay safe as per NFPA 70-E standards.

An Arc Flash happens when electric current flows through an air gap between conductors. Arc Flashes can also be caused by

ð Sparks due to breaks or gaps in the insulator
ð Equipment failure due to use of substandard parts, improper installation, or even normal wear and tear.
ð Dust, Corrosion or other impurities on the surface of the conductor
ð Arc Flash is caused by uncontrolled conduction of electrical current from phase to ground, phase to neutral, and/or phase to phase accompanied by ionization of the surrounding air.
